Cleaning a fully pumped gas heating system makes it easier to work on the system. To completely flush the system of gunk and contaminants could be one such instance. Cleaning the metal radiators is the most frequent driver of this activity. Switching off the heating boiler and heating pump should be the first measures you take. To enable the system to totally clear you will need to see to it that no water is moving into the central heating system.
The header or expansion cylinder in the attic is used to normally top up the system with water. The expansion cylinder uses a ball-valve similar to that in a toilet system.
